Resident Employment

Sept 2005 – Present: Casual Technical Staff, The New Theatre, Cardiff

Since beginning work at the New Theatre I have been given numerous opportunities to utilize the lighting skills that I have. I have worked on many major touring shows, involving all aspects of lighting; most recent was ‘The National Theatre’ Production of ‘The History Boys’. I have taken part in fit-ups for ‘A Man for All Seasons’, ‘Joseph and his amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’, ‘The Blood Brothers’, ‘Festen’ & ‘Cats’, endeavouring to be an active part of stage crew on all of my show calls. The Christmas 2005 pantomime ‘Peter Pan’ was a great opportunity as I was responsible for operating the board, maintaining the rig and focus each day. Separate to this I have operated a Strand 550i board on a production of Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’, ‘A Chorus of Disapproval’ and ‘The Witches of Eastwick’. I have also Follow spotted on their in-house production of ‘Godspell’, ‘Lady Salsa’ and the touring production of ‘The Rat Pack’.

Sept 2005 – Present: Casual Technical Staff, Bristol Hippodrome

At the Hippodrome I have worked on major West End productions of the largest scale. These include ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’ and productions of Cameron Mackintosh’s ‘My Fair Lady’ & ‘Miss Saigon’ of which I follow spotted, along with the Christmas show Bill Kenwright’s ‘Scrooge’ & ‘Jerry Springer The Opera’. I have been part of their Electrics Team for 15 Months now, on all Fit-Up’s & Get-Outs. Further to this I have also been involved in Get-ins & Outs on Sound for both ‘Seven Brides for Seven Brothers’ & ‘Footloose’. Other opportunities at the Hippodrome have been to work continuously alongside the Welsh National Opera on their 2006 season. I worked on their 2006 Christmas Pantomime ‘Peter Pan’, which was an opportunity to operate and plot on a Wholehog II console and also maintain the Rig & Focus. The Hippodrome has also given me my first opportunity in ‘Fly’s’ on Ellen Kent’s ‘Nutcracker’, which I achieved with no problems. Finally I have gained qualifications here for Working at Height & Strand 500 Series Console Programming, through ‘Stage Electrics’. I have also participated in door keeping duties, which has given me an even clearer understanding of how such a large theatre is run, and utilised my organisational and people skills.

Sept 2002 – Sept 2005: Casual Technical Staff, Cambridge Corn Exchange

The Cambridge Corn Exchange stages a mixed programme of events. As well as working on Musicals and Theatre shows I have worked on Rock Concerts, Opera, Ballet, Classical Concerts and Contemporary Dance. Moscow City Ballet gave me a clear insight into working in repertoire with a dance company as did the British Dance Edition. I have gained a comprehensive understanding of both the Rock and Roll and Lighting industry and further improved my Health and Safety awareness and Safe working practices. I was also heavily involved in their in house productions. These included ‘Oliver’, ‘Blitz’, ‘The Wizard of Oz’ & ‘West Side Story’ where I took on the role of Assistant Electrician/2nd Lx reporting to the Lighting Designer for all duties including board programming of their Strand 530i and offering creative input. I also have experience in lighting bands such as ‘The Drifters’ and tribute band ‘U2 Two’. During the three years I worked there, I took part in general first line lamp and building maintenance and basic PAT Tester. Finally, I had the opportunity of working at the Cambridge Folk Festival, where I was Backline Technician on Stage One, responsible for scene/instrument changes at one of the most major and popular festivals of the year.

Freelance

August 2006: Freelance Lighting Technician for Stage Electrics

During August this year I took on some freelance work for the leading Hire, Sales and Production Company Stage Electrics. I worked on the Towersey Folk Festival in Oxfordshire. I was responsible for the Lighting fit up on the site, ensuring both Interior and Exterior lighting was ready for the opening day. I learnt a great deal about resourcefulness as working outside can sometimes be difficult if the weather is against you, so you have to be able to persevere when you are on a tight schedule.

April & May 2006: Board-Op/Production Electrician, on 'Clown Atlas' by Sardine Circus Productions for 2Can Productions

Through a theatre company called Sardine Circus Productions I gained the opportunity to work on a small tour of a show called ‘Clown Atlas’. The show debuted at The Rondo Theatre in Bath. 2Can Productions were the company providing technical and design services for the tour. Working for 2Can Productions, I was responsible for parts of the design, rig, focus and plotting processes, then onto operating both a Strand 520i and Sound Fx simultaneously for Showtime. This was a great chance to utilize the skills I have learnt and it was a great success.

The Rose of Kingston

Between the period of November and December 2004, I worked at the New Rose of Kingston Theatre. Working alongside the Production Electrician and Lighting Designer (Peter Mumford) on a Sir Peter Hall production of Shakespeare’s ‘As you like it’ through installation, programming and maintaining the show, and then onto board operation. At this point both designer and production electrician had left, and I was responsible for full maintenance of desk, cues, lights and dimmers. All of which I managed with no problems; I also learnt to fix colour wheels and Gobo’s in Vari-lites. It was all a valuable experience for me. I can give a reference from the Stage Manager if required. During the time I was in Kingston, I also took part in another show using the same lighting rig. This being ‘As you see it’, which was a collection of local colleges and schools in and around Kingston, performing interpretations of the show I was working on. My duties involved using the show cues and making up lighting cues from these. I demonstrated good repertoire, with just a twenty minute tech time for each, and then straight into performances for the public. Everybody involved, were pleased with the results and I can provide a collective reference from all parties involved.

Rock/Concert/Television & Conference

In the summer of 2003 I became responsible for crewing many Outdoor and Arena events. These included major Festivals, ‘The Rolling Stones’ at Twickenham and ‘Justin Timberlake’ at Earl’s Court. In June 2003 I worked at Milton Keynes Bowl on the fit up crew for ‘Eminem’ where I was responsible for a stage crew of twelve members. I then went on to work the largest event of 2003, when ‘Robbie Williams’ played at Knebworth. I was on the lighting fit up crew and again responsible for a huge number of my own crew. In November 2005 I worked at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay on ‘The Royal Variety Performance’. I was part of the four day fit-up crew, going on to Follow spot for the show. I then follow spotted Her Majesty The Queen whilst she was on stage meeting the production team after the show. Also in November 2005 I worked at The Park Plaza hotel in London on the Vignette 2005 conference. A massive I.T. and Website design company. I was involved in Rigging & Focusing, going on to Dimmer maintenance for the three days of the conference.
